Strategic planning is truly the happiest season — here’s why we cherish mapping out next year’s vision
We enjoy making plans. Whether it’s for three years, four years, or perhaps longer in the future. Though we don’t think it works because everything comes true, we like preparing because that’s why we like it. Planning, in our opinion, is effective since life and work are chaotic. No matter the obstacles in your way, taking the time to consider what you truly want to accomplish — even if it never materializes — is a valuable exercise that will help you get to the core of your goals.
At MND, our role is chief in ensuring our startup achieves our mission to spread holiday cheer through technology. Our strategic plan is the toy workshop building guide to get us there.
It all starts by getting crystal clear on the vision and mission.
We review: What does our festive future look like when we succeed? And what’s our essential purpose for existing? This grounds us before mapping the terrain.
Next, based on our multi-year strategy, we set one-year goals and key results across metrics like revenue growth, product adoption, customer satisfaction, and culture. These pinned targets focus our efforts amidst limitless options.
We also allocate budget and headcount based on these goals. Plus, continuously analyzing data based on the metrics is what grounds our goals in operational realities, not just cheer and hope.
With targets set, we build project plans to hit the goals that underpin our vision. All this is tied together in a strategic document that guides business planning.
But why does this planning ritual … matter?
With infinite directions we could pursue, strategy keeps us judiciously using precious resources on what matters most. Rather than getting distracted by every interesting setback we pass, we stay focused on our mission.
It also prepares us to handle the yeti hiding behind the next tree. By evaluating risks, we ready contingency plans to pivot while still moving north.
By putting in the work now, we have confidence in our preparedness despite the uncertainties ahead. We tend to the compass, so we stay on course regardless of storms.
Frankly, without regular revisiting of strategy, it’s easy to wake up one day and realize you’re sledging south when you intend to head north. Our focus is to start each year with a clear destination through strategic planning.
Here’s our step-by-step guide to help you with your planning-
Step 1: Gather Your Team:
- It’s all about collaboration! Round up your co-founders, key team members, and maybe even your intern who can make killer coffee. A diverse perspective is very important for a strategic plan.
Step 2: Dream Big, Then Dream Bigger:
- Don’t hold back! Let your imagination run wild. Brainstorm crazy ideas, challenge assumptions, and think outside the reindeer box. Remember, “impossible” is just a fancy word for “haven’t figured it out yet.”
Step 3: Research:
- Get into market research, competitor analysis, and industry trends. Your selections will be better informed the more you know.
Step 4: Craft Your Vision & Mission Statements:
- Think powerful, inspiring, and laser-focused. Your vision should paint a picture of your future, while your mission should articulate your purpose. Think Nike’s “Just Do It” or Tesla’s “To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”
Step 5: Break It Down, Brick by Brick:
- Transform your vision into actionable steps. Set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) and map out your milestones like twinkling lights on a Christmas tree.
Step 6: Track Your Progress & Celebrate the Wins!
- Don’t just set it and forget it! Regularly monitor your progress, adjust your course as needed, and celebrate every victory, big or small.
Now, we’re not blind to the odds. Statistics say that 90% of startups fall within a decade.
Ouch
But another number that constantly hits us is, one that grows excitement rather than fear: 70% of successful startups had a clearly defined strategic plan. That is the plan we are chasing in December.
So, while the future is hard to predict, our annual planning session is the time to get grounded, get aligned, and get ready to capitalize on whatever opportunities emerge.
This December, we urge you to find your happy place in strategic planning. Whether it’s a solo brainstorming session or a mind map scrawled on a napkin at your favorite coffee shop — carve out some space to dream, map, and ignite your path. You might just surprise yourself with how much joy you find in shaping your future.
Clarity of vision, alignment of the team, navigation prepared — our sledge awaits as we prepare to dash off into another year of adventures.
From MND, we wish you'll a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
